Ariel Francoeur is an NYC-based actor and director. She attended The University of Iowa as an Iowa Arts Fellow, and graduated with an MFA in Directing in conjunction with the Iowa Playwrights Workshop. Her directorial focus is new play development, though as a theater performer she is drawn to classics – with the goal of illuminating the feminist perspective in leading women characters written by men.
Ariel was a co-founder and the Producing Artistic Director of The Navigators, a New York feminist sci-fi theater company. The Navigators are dedicated to elevating female driven stories in a male-dominated genre by empowering women playwrights, producers, directors, designers, and actors in their productions.
Recently Ariel spent the summer in Chicago as Izzy in Shelter – a sci-fi play about a woman broadcasting a radio show from her bunker after the end of the world, produced by Otherworld Theater Company and The Navigators. She’s also continuing to direct productions of MegJoBethAmy & Louisa – a devised adaptation/biopic of Little Women with a queer twist. The show has been produced at the Hollywood and DC Fringe Festivals, at the Center at West Park in NYC, and will be produced at Southwest Shakespeare in January 2020. Before this she played Lady Macbeth with the Red Monkey Theater Group in NYC, and will work with them again this fall as Olivia in Twelfth Night.
